CFA Society of Chicago is pleased to announce our annual "Fundamentals of Investing" course. The course will run for six consecutive Tuesdays, beginning September 11. This course typically sells out, so register now!

Course Content

Sept. 11: Stocks and Equity Markets (Salient Characteristics, Stock Issuance, Stock Trading, Indexes, Trading Costs, Margin Trading, Short Selling, Security Regulation) - Taught by Ann Logue, CFA, freelance writer, consulting analyst, and instructor at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Sept. 18: Overview of Financial Statements and Financial Ratios (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow Statement, Liquidity Ratios, Profitability Ratios, Asset Management Ratios, Valuation Ratios) - Taught by Ann Logue, CFA, freelance writer, consulting analyst, and instructor at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Sept. 25: Alternative Assets (Hedge Funds, Venture Capital, Real Estate, Commodities) - Taught by Kevin Vandolder, CFA, Principal at Ennis, Knupp & Associates.

Oct. 2: Mutual Funds and Investment Styles (Structure of Mutual Funds, Types of Mutual Funds, Investment Styles, Selecting Mutual Funds, Performance Evaluation, Costs) - Taught by Michael Falk, CFA, Vice President and CIO at ProManage LLC.

Oct. 9: Economy and Interest Rates (Inflation, Interest Rates, Money Supply, Gross Domestic Product, Productivity, Demographics, Unemployment) - Taught by Asha Bangalore, Ph.D., Vice President and Economist at The Northern Trust Company.

Oct. 16: Bonds and Fixed Income Markets (Characteristics of Bonds, Types of Bonds, Calculating Present Value of Bonds, Yield to Maturity, Risks of Bonds, Duration) - Taught by Christopher Vincent, CFA, Principal, Head of Fixed Income Investment Management at William Blair & Co., LLC.

Speaker Biographies

Asha G. Bangalore is a Vice President and Economist at The Northern Trust Company, Chicago. Prior to joining Northern Trust as an Officer in May, 1994, Ms. Bangalore was a consultant with Financial & Economic Strategies, Inc., a faculty member at Trinity College, and an economist at Industrial Development Bank of India in Bombay, India. She was named a Second Vice President in November, 1996.

Ms. Bangalore received a B.A. degree from Bangalore University in India, and an M.A. degree and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Connecticut. She is a member of the National Association of Business Economists and the American Economic Association.

Michael S. Falk is a Vice President and the Chief Investment Officer at ProManage LLC. Mr. Falk is responsible for developing and monitoring ProManage's investment policies and procedures. He directs the investment manager research effort, as well as the construction of investment portfolios. He is the Chair of the company's Investment Committee as well as the primary liaison among the Investment Committee, the company and its clients.

Aside from his duties at ProManage, Mr. Falk is part of the CFA Institute's Speaker Retainer Program, an active committee member for the Profit Sharing 401(k) Council of America, and teaches as an adjunct professor at DePaul University in their CFP Certificate Program, as well as on behalf of the CFA Society of Chicago. In addition, he frequently writes and speaks on retirement industry and investing issues.

Mr. Falk graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S. in Finance. He is also a CFA Charterholder, a member of the CFA Institute, and holds the CRC designation.

Ann Logue is a freelance writer, consulting analyst, and instructor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is the author of Hedge Funds for Dummies (Wiley, 2006), and has also written for Barron's, The New York Times, Newsweek Japan and Compliance Week, among other publications. Her current career follows 12 years of experience as an investment analyst.

Ms. Logue holds a B.A. from Northwestern University, an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago, and the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Kevin Vandolder is a principal at Ennis Knupp & Associates, where he serves as a primary consultant and manages consulting assignments for a select number of the firm's retainer and project clients. Mr. Vandolder has led the firm's defined contribution investment management research group for several years. Before joining the firm in 1996, Mr. Vandolder spent over four years in the corporate finance group of the $9 billion Canadian Westcoast Energy group of companies and has previously served in the Canadian Navy.

Mr. Vandolder holds a B.Comm. degree in finance from the University of Windsor and is a former President and Treasurer of the CFA Society of Chicago. In addition, he has served as an adjunct faculty member at DePaul and Northwestern University.

Christopher T. Vincent is a Principal at William Blair & Company, where he heads the Fixed Income Group within the Investment Management division. He joined the firm in June 2002 as a fixed-income portfolio manager. Mr. Vincent began his institutional investment career in 1983, and was previously a managing director/senior fixed-income portfolio manager with Zurich Scudder Investments for 14 years. Before that, he was with Ralston Purina Company for five years in the treasury department in the plan sponsor role, where he was responsible for fixed-income investments for the company's benefit plans.

Mr. Vincent serves on the board of the CFA Society of Chicago. He holds a B.S.B.A. from the University of Missouri and an M.B.A. from Saint Louis University.
