Richard Bernstein is Merrill Lynch’s chief US strategist and chief quantitative strategist in Merrill Lynch’s global securities research and economics group.


Rich was named chief US strategist in December 2001, and continues to serve as the chief quantitative strategist. In this role, he integrates his existing quantitative expertise into a broader range of investment issues for both retail and institutional clients. He recommends U.S. asset allocations for equities, bonds and cash, determines forecasts for the S&P 500 and other major U.S. indices. Richard is the author of "Style Investing - Unique Insight into Equity Management" published by John Wiley & Sons, which has been required reading for CFA Level II and “Navigate the Noise: Investing in the New Age of Media and Hype.” Rich donates his profits from these books to charity.


Prior to joining Merrill Lynch in 1988, he was an Investment Strategist/Quantitative Analyst at E.F. Hutton and at Tucker Anthony. He has been voted to the Institutional Investor All-America Research team for the past eleven years, and was a member of the “First Team” for the past seven consecutive years. He also placed first in the inaugural TheStreet.com analyst ranking, and was selected as one of the eleven Fortune Magazine 2001 and 2002 All-Star Analysts.


Rich is a member of the Board of Trustees of Hamilton College and a member of the committee that oversees the College’s Endowment Fund. He received an A.B. degree in Economics from Hamilton College, as well as, an MBA in Finance, with honors, from New York University.
