Saving America's Retirement System

8:30 am - 6:00 pm
Palmer House Hilton, 17 E. Monroe Street, Chicago, IL  60603   (Driving Directions)

Program Description:
The U.S. retirement system, often referred to as a three-legged stool, has become increasingly unstable. The first leg, defined benefit plans, are shrinking fast, while second leg personal savings - to include savings plans like the 401 (k) - is also in decline. The last leg - Social Security - is the country's only 'guaranteed retirement income source', and is the primary income source for fully one third of American retirees. The program will discuss factors leading to today's dire situation along with public policy and private sector solutions to provide adequate retirement income for millions of Americans. Attendees will also hear from leading plan sponsors about current initiatives related to the management of their retirement plans.

Opening: Michael Falk, CFA, CRC
The Importance of Entitlement Polices to Sustainable Economic Growth: Today's economic growth challenges will become greater in the future if only due to the world's agedness, fertility levels and entitlement policies. However, those same challenges could be overcome with more thoughtful public policies along with a culture of responsibility and appreciation. Michael Falk reconsiders what makes us "healthy, wealthy and wise," and focuses on how we might re-imagine healthcare, retirement and education policies to usher in a new ERA of sustainable, long-term economic growth.

Session 1: Plan Sponsor Perspective
Leading plan sponsors and consultants discuss today's retirement programs along with their efforts to ensure that their participants save enough to live comfortably in retirement. Our panel will discuss the existing 'state of play' along with future initiatives designed to improve retirement readiness for the American worker.

Moderator: Larry Siegel; The Gary P. Brinson Director of Research for the CFA Institute Research Foundation

Panelists:
Josh Cohen, CFA; Head of Institutional Defined Contribution, Americas Institutional, Russell Investments
Gary M. Hansen; Vice President & Division Manager, U.S. Retirement & Savings Plans, BMO Harris Bank
Craig McCrohon; Chairman of the Investment Committee and Member of the Executive Committee, State Universities Retirement System
Adrienne Voltattorni; VP Total Rewards, CNA Financial

Session 2: Public Policy Solutions
The number of people in the American workforce not covered by any type of retirement plan, at nearly 50%, is staggering. Five states - California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Oregon and Washington - have passed laws paving the way to offer state-run retirement plans, and eighteen additional states are considering such a measure. We bring together experts at the forefront of this important public initiative to discuss both opportunities and challenges associated with bringing these plans to fruition.

Moderator: Paul Root, CFA; Defined Contribution Investment Strategist, Northern Trust Asset Management

Panelists:
Angela M. Antonelli; Executive Director, Center for Retirement Initiatives, Georgetown University
Marla Kreindler; Partner, Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP
Gerri Madrid-Davis; Director of Financial Security, AARP

Session 3: Private Sector Solutions
As defined contribution plans celebrate their 10th anniversary since the Pension Protection Act, they have made considerable strides as the primary retirement savings vehicle for most Americans. But what will it take for DC plans to truly take the place of defined benefit plans of old? Our panel of experts will discuss new initiatives to improve America's defined contribution model.

Moderator: Lori Lucas, CFA; EVP and Defined Contribution Practice Leader, Callan Associates

Panelists:
Dick Davies; Senior Managing Director, AllianceBernstein Defined Contribution
Mathew R. Jensen, CFA; Director, Target Date Strategies, Fidelity Investments
Lucian Marinescu, CFA; Portfolio Manager, Head of Target-Date Strategies, Morningstar
